Babywearing Safety

Being informed on safety guidelines is so important when it comes to babywearing.

Safety Statement

Babywearing offers many benefits, but it’s important to follow safety guidelines to support the wellbeing of both baby and caregiver.

At Babywearing Ireland, we are happy to offer fit checks and general advice. Caregivers are encouraged to contact us via our Facebook page with any concerns.

Key safety points:

  • Don’t do anything while babywearing that you wouldn’t do when holding a baby in your arms (e.g. climbing on chairs).

  • Monitor your baby’s temperature closely. Dress baby and caregiver in light layers, as body heat is shared.

  • There is no set time limit for babywearing, but watch for hunger cues, take breaks for feeds and nappy changes, and rest as needed.

  • Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for age and weight limits. Some carriers offer better positioning than others, and we aim to guide you to the safest option.

  • Be aware that a small number of slings have been recalled for safety reasons; we share recall information with our community when it arises.

We are all parents and caregivers learning together. When we know better, we do better.

Take care and stay safe.

TICKS Guideline

Babywearing Ireland follows the TICKS Rule for Safe Babywearing devised by the UK Sling Manufacturers & Retailers Consortium.

Please also follow manufacture instructions and make sure the sling is in good condition. Babywearing is a useful parenting tool, however, parent observation is always required.
